Government policies promote increase of livestock productivity as well as improved value addition and marketing of livestock products. The overall goal of the project is to increase the income of the Mongolian herders and ex-herders in 12 Aimags through sustainable business and marketing mechanisms. It is the second - more market focused - phase of the Baruun Mongol – Local Economic Development Project, which is implemented from June 2007 to March 2009. The project addresses issues such as herder’s livelihoods, rural development, food security, poverty, gender equity and good governance. Implementing partner is the Mongolian branch of the international NGO ‘Mercy Corps’, Edinburgh, Scotland. The steering committee comprises the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry as well as relevant Local Governments and external partners such as SDC, EU, USDA.
