Integrated Program to fight HIV/AIDS
Mozambique still faces a severe generalized HIV epidemic that taxes the fragile health system and has adverse effects on growth as well as development in the country. With the aim to contribute to lessen the impact of HIV/AIDS, this program introduces essential components of an integrated strategy for the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS.

| Background |
The population of Mozambique counts around 22 million people. According to UNAIDS, in 2011 11.3% of the population was seropositive, which is almost double the sub-Saharan rate and corresponds to 1.4 million people (53% women, 14% children under 15 years old). In the same year 74,000 people died from HIV/AIDS. Young women (aged 15-24 years) are disproportionately more affected, in some central and southern provinces at rates five to six times higher in comparison to men. In 2002 a program was launched by the Italian NGO Comunità Sant’Egidio offering an innovative, holistic response to HIV/AIDS called DREAM - Drug Resources Enhancement against AIDS and Malnutrition. Implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Health, the program has developed a very good implementation methodology with effective administration systems, procedures and tools as well as competent staff, resulting in an excellent level of efficiency of implementation. |
| Objectives |
DREAM aims to increase and strengthen health services offered to people living with HIV/AIDS, malnutrition and opportunistic Infections in Mozambique by providing– in synergy with the Ministry of Health and local partners - high standard HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment services, nutritional supplementation, health and nutrition education courses, home care, and professional training for local personnel. The overall goal of the program is to contribute to lessen the impact of HIV/AIDS in Mozambique and support the Government in improving prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) services with the ambition of eliminating new cases of paediatric AIDS. |
| Target groups |
The target groups are the poor in both urban and rural areas with a special focus on women through the PMTCT program. Direct beneficiaries are patients with HIV/AIDS and especially HIV+ women and their children but also health staff of the health centres. Indirect beneficiaries are all the family members of the direct beneficiary. |
