Hintergrund

Tramways are increasingly recognized as the most efficient and environmentally most friendly public transportation system. The City of Belgrade lacked the necessary funds to purchase new vehicles for its existing tramway system. The donation of second-hand trams, trailers and spare parts by the two Basel transportation companies Basler Verkehrs-Betriebe (BVB) and Baselland Transport (BLT), was a welcome measure to improve public transportation. The project includes the rehabilitation of trams and trailers, their transportation and a range of measures and activities aiming at the improvement of Belgrade City’s public transportation system.

Ziele

The donation of BVB and BLT vehicles, thought the financial support of SECO, aims to improve the quality of the transportation services for the citizens of Belgrade, by increasing the number of vehicles and subsequently enabling better frequency of vehicles, since this is one of the most important aspects that contribute to the quality of the public transportation.

The increased number of citizens using public transport contributes to lower pollution in the City.

Mittelfristige Wirkungen

As a result of 16 years of cooperation, the Swiss trams make up 1/3 of all GSP’s railway vehicles (a total of 113 vehicles)

The GSP’s tramway transportation efficiency is considerably increased, particularly since the trams from Basel are more reliable and less prone to breakdowns than others. This in turn leads to manifest customer satisfaction improvements

The Belgrade Public Transport Company’s (GSP) tramway passenger capacity is increased by 30%. With the ensuing 60% increase in traffic (measured in km per tramway), this leads to a doubling of the tramway transportation capacity

Donated trams make an average of 916’000km/year, transporting more than seven million citizens/year.
