Strengthening Accountability and Governance of NGOs in Nepal (SAGON)
NGOs in Nepal provide important social services and complement government efforts to promote socio-economic and political development. However, the limited management capacity and inadequate governance of many NGOs hampers effective service delivery. The project supports the NGO Federation and its members to improve their effectiveness, accountability and governance through capacity building and the establishment and monitoring of Internal Control Systems (ICS).

Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) are important actors in Nepal’s socio-economic and political development. NGOs compliment the works of the government, private and international development actors in delivering services to the people in rural communities and facilitate process of civic engagement and social change by organizing, empowering and mobilizing communities, especially Disadvantaged Groups (DAGs). About 8’000 NGOs are active in the development sector. However, many NGOs are lacking in transparency and accountability towards their beneficiaries, have an inadequate internal governance, and weak management and administrative and financial systems. This is particularly true for remote areas with a higher proportion of poor and disadvantaged groups.
