World Food Programme (WFP) – contribution to the country programmes Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger
The Sahel region faces periodic food crises due to climatic variations but also due to structural deficiencies in the countries. WFP implements food assistance programmes (e.g. school feeding) in the different countries of the region. SDC provides a financial contribution to the WFP country programmes of the four SDC priority countries. It takes part in the national coordination mechanisms to improve food security in the region and takes part in the policy level dialogue with WFP to strengthen its relevance, coherence and performance.

| Contexte |
The West Africa region has high food insecurity and malnutrition rates in a context of chronic poverty, often compounded by political instability, food price volatility and recurrent droughts and floods. In this context, a significant challenge is balancing acute needs with long-term development goals. To do so, resilience-building and capacity development is mainstreamed into all WFP activities. |
| Objectifs |
The overall objective of the WFP development programmes in the region is to reduce chronic food insecurity and hunger and support disaster prevention measures and emergency preparedness. |

| Résultats |
Principaux résultats antérieurs: In school feeding programmes, as far as possible food is procured locally in order to support the local agricultural production and the lcoal economy. In 2011, WFP procured a total of 2.4 million mt of food valued at US$1.23 billion in 87 countries. 71% of the food was purchased in developing countries. School meals encourage poor households to send children to school and keep them there. WFP school meals programmes often target girls, enabling them to gain an education even in societies that traditionally exclude them from schooling. In the poorest parts of the world, a school meal programme can double primary school enrolment in one year. |
