Regional Economic Development in Macedonia (RED) – Contribution to GiZ Programme
The level of development of Macedonia’s 8 regions is highly dispersed. A national system for balanced regional development was built up since 2005 with the support of the German Government (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH); however, it is still facing challenges in ensuring adequate implementation. SDC will co-finance this final project phase in order to contribute to the improvement of governance and policy coordination on regional level.

| Contesto |
Significant differences in the level of development exist within Macedonia. Due to this, a wave of internal migration to the capital city and depopulation of the urban and rural areas in other parts of the country has occurred. A coherent and systematic approach is necessary to stimulate a more balanced development throughout the country. |
| Obiettivi |
To decrease the regional disparities in development within Macedonia through strengthened regional governance and better policy coordination. |
| Gruppi target |
Institutions at national and regional level, which are part of the national balanced regional development system, e.g. Cabinet of the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, Ministry for Local Self-Government, National Council for Balanced Regional Development, Bureau for Regional Development, Councils and Centers for development of the 8 Planning Regions, and their regional partners. Indirect beneficiary is the population of Macedonia (approx. 2 mio people) |

| Risultati |
Risultati fasi precedenti: With previous BMZ/GIZ support, a national system for balanced regional development was established i.e. legal framework and institutions at national and regional levels were established, 640 specialized personnel was trained and policy/planning documents were developed. Successful implementation of the balanced development policy, adequate fund allocation and improved coordination between institutions in the system are the main challenges ahead. |
