As part of its recognition of the importance of reliable statistics for transparency and accountability, SDC is supporting through a core contribution the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) to produce timely reliable statistic of good quality. Such data are necessary to enable the Palestinian Authority (PA), the civil society, legislative council, private sector and academics and also international actors  in particular the UN agencies, to plan and monitor  development processes, and to follow up implementation of the national strategies and National development Plan.

Background

The PCBS was established soon after the PA emerged following the Oslo agreement of 1993. Since establishment, it has served as a pillar in the national development process, illuminating resources, needs and changes in the occupied Palestinian territory.

Its statistics and reports are widely used for research and planning purposes, by national and international, governmental, non-governmental and private institutions, and individuals.

The PCBS Advisory Council, headed by the Prime Minister, meets semi-annually to review national priorities in official statistics.

Palestinian planners, decision makers, GO and NGO institutions, academic/ research centres, interest groups, Palestinian public, international development agencies and multilateral organisations

  • All Statistical indicators in different fields are made available according to the user needs
  • Quality Management system set up in a high proficiency and standards
  • Statistical Databases, GIS and Atlases are set up and well performed
  • High qualified and professional PCBS and statistical unit staff are functioning

  • Statistics in demographic and social fields (population, demographic, and social), economic and environment (Agriculture, energy, housing and tourism) spheres are produced and available  
  • Statistical central registers are built, updated and developed
  • Statistics on Palestinians in the Diaspora from different sources are made available
  • Statistical Methodology, Standards and Quality are enhanced
  • Prevalence of Statistics, respondent burden

 


Results from previous phases:  

  • Statistics from surveys and administrative records are available in
    • demographic and social  indicators (population, demographic and social)
    • economic indicators (transportation, services, national account, establishment census, prices/ price indexes, Balance of payment, foreign trade,..etc.)
    • environment indicators (agriculture, energy, housing & tourism)
  • Statistical central registers are under development (population, business, farm holding, etc.)
  • Main Statistics on Palestinians in the Diaspora from different sources are made  available
  • Statistical Methodology, Standards and Quality are enhanced
  • Administrative records quality, proactive dissemination, and users outreach, are improved
  • Different types of maps, atlas, and geographical database are made available
  • National Monitoring System database has been developed and made available to users.
  • Capacity of PCBS staff  and users in different statistical activities and practices are enhanced
