In line with the Good Humanitarian Donorship (GHD) principles, Switzerland recognizes the necessity of predictable and flexible funding to respond to changing needs in humanitarian crises. SDC funding to WFP operations allows the World Food Programme (WFP) to respond proactively and to provide immediate food assistance in life-threatening situations.

Empowering Crisis Affected Communities in Southern Districts of KP

Since 2008 more than seven million people have been displaced due to conflict and natural disasters in Pakistan. This has put a significant strain on relevant government agencies and hosting communities. By developing a long term recovery strategy, this programme will improve the living conditions of the affected population by building the capability of the relevant government agencies and hosting communities and providing livelihood opportunities to the affected population.

Support to Disaster Management Authorities for the protection of population affected by the military operations in North Waziristan

01.10.2014 - 31.03.2020

Pakistani military operation against militants in North Waziristan Agency on Pakistani/Afghan border, has displaced over half a million people. Their temporary settlement in the neighbouring regions constitutes a challenge for the hosting population and authorities. SDC will enhance instituational capacity of the Disaster Management Authorities to fullfil their manadates to the protection of IDPs and and building resilience of the communities. It will enable the authorities to better handle challenges posed by conflict and recurring natural disasters.

Enlarging Humanitarian and Development Space in Pakistan

01.10.2014 - 30.09.2018

Shrinking development and humanitarian space is a major challenge in Pakistan. This arises from bureaucratic impediments and security constraints. SDC contribution to the Pakistan Humanitarian Forum (PHF), the main organising forum for INGOs in country, will strengthen it to advocate, coordinate and provide safety services to INGOs. Increase operational space will directly help some 20 million people requiring development assistance and currently targeted by the PHF members.

Water for Livelihoods (W4L) – Phase II

The project promotes equitable water governance for food and people in over 300 villages in semi-arid watercatchment areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province (KPK). When organized in water user organizations, approximately 35-45% of households in the targeted districts will use water more carefully within revised frame conditions. These are jointly reformed with local governments and contribute to solving water conflicts more efficiently and peacefully.


Multi Donor Trust Fund (MDTF)

01.12.2013 - 31.12.2022

The MDTF aims to reduce the socio-economic marginalisation of people, with focus on women, religious minorities and internally displaced people, in the Pakistan border regions to Afghanistan; the fund will contribute to state-building in the most fragile regions of the country by strengthening capacity of the subnational governments. Consequently, the population will get increased access to basic services and livelihood opportunities.

Strengthening Rule of Law in Malakand (SRLM)

The Malakand Division suffered through 3 years of extremist activities which had an adverse impact on its already weak legal system. A significant factor that led to the takeover of the region by armed groups was the weak justice system. The Strengthening Rule of Law in Malakand (SRLM) Programme aims to support the government in its efforts to stabilise the region by strengthening the legal institutions, with focus on formal and informal mechanisms.


Police Capacity Development on Election Security through the UNDP Election Support Program

On 11th May 2013, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will, for the first time in history, administer a transition from one full term democratic elected government to another. The probability of electoral violence threatens this opportunity. The police are the most important player in smooth conduct of election security. Yet, the majority of the police force has limited knowledge of electoral security protocol. With a contribution to the UNDP Election Support Program the capacity of police in election security will be enhanced.
