The improvement of corporate governance practices is widely seen as one important element in strenghtening the foundation for countries' long-term economic performance. By working on four main channels (regulatory, macro, market and firm level) the program will ultimately help firms improve performance, access to finance and overall sustainability and positively impact the development process.

Contesto In Latin America, the corporate governance situation has evolved considerably over the last decade. However, there is ample room for improvement in terms of capacity, enforcement as well as persistent vulnerabilities for small and medium sized enterprises and family owned business. A sound corporate governance of an enterprise not only helps in strengthening its performance, but can also facilitate access to finance as banks see enterprises with a sound corporate governance (e.g. with a succession plan) as less risky.
Obiettivi The overall goal of the program is to strenghten the corporate governance environment mainly in Peru and Colombia. The adoption and demand of these practices are expected to result in improved financial and operational performance at the firm and market intermediary level. As a result, the Program will facilitate at least 125 million in financing.
Effetti a medio termine Increased awareness for the importance of good corporate governance.Improved regulatory environment related to corporate governance. Increased local institutional capacity for the promotion and implementation of good corporate governance services provided to companies. Better corporate governance practices in companies.

Risultati principali attesi:   Increasing public awareness and sharing knowledge on general and advanced topics of the benefits of corporate governance by participating in selected awareness raising activities together with local partners. Strengthening the regulatory enviornment through assisting the drafting/updating of laws and codes. Build capacity and strengthen local governance intermediaries. Improve corporate governance practices in firms through providing direct assistance.

Risultati fasi precedenti:   In Colombia, the program will build on key deliverables from the SECO financed Confecamaras project such as stakeholder management (various local stakeholders were closely inolved in the CONFECAMARAS project), continuation of collaboration with chambers of commerce (all chambers have expressed interest to continue implementation and reach out towards more SMEs) and the take-over of institutional tools and partnerships.
