Romanian Gendarmerie’s Crowd-control capacity improved

Romanian Gendarmerie’s Crowd-control capacity was improved through a Swiss- Romanian cooperation project. A two-day workshop on crowd-control component was organized on September 22nd by the Romanian Gendarmerie in cooperation with the Police Academy in Savatan from Switzerland.

This event marked the closing of the two component of the project “Strengthening the capacities of Romanian Gendarmerie” and pursued to discussing the management of operations of public safety and public order during public/ social demonstrations and sporting events. In the opening of the event the representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Mr. Paul Zai, Councillor of the State Secretary and Col. dr. eng. Ion Peligrad, deputy of the general inspector of the Romanian Gendarmerie welcomed the participants.  The workshop was attended by nearly 50 officers from all units of the Romanian Gendarmerie as well as experts in the field from Switzerland and Portugal, who exposed cases and presented their experience, facilitating as such the transferring of the know-how and the innovation across.  The experts from Switzerland who participated to the workshop were Capitan Christophe Bobillier from the Police of Geneva, Major  Simon Spoerri  from the Police of Basel and Prof. Olivier Fillieule and dr. Pascal Viot from the University in Lausanne.

“Strengthening the capacities of Romanian Gendarmerie” project has three main components.  The objective of the first two components of the project has already been achieved: one concerning public security in tourist areas of the mountains ended this year in February and the one related to the maintenance of public order at major international events ( crowd control)concludes with the mentioned workshop. The objective of the third component, to be implemented also by the Romanian Gendarmerie, will focus on the strengthening of the capacity in (coordinated) Air-Rescue Operations in mountain areas.

On this occasion Roland Python, Head of the Swiss Contribution Office in Romania, expressed his satisfaction with the way in which the project took place so far, appreciating it as a perfect example for the excellent and close cooperation in the implementation of the Romanian-Swiss Cooperation Programme. “Through active and constant interaction, at all levels, Switzerland has experienced the privilege of constructive cooperation and results-oriented” mentioned in his speech addressed to the audience.

The project "Strengthening the capacity of the Romanian Gendarmerie" is part of The Swiss-Romanian Cooperation Programme with a total value of 181 million Swiss francs, aiming at reducing economic and social disparities between Romania and the other Member States of the European Union, and between the different regions of Romania.
