Between March 24 and 27, 2026, Ms Debora Kern - Head of the EU Member States section from the Swiss Agency for Development & Cooperation (SDC) and Mr. Markus Bürli - Programme Manager responsible for Romania, paid an official visit to Romania, in the framework of the second Swiss Contribution's implementation. The mission focused on assessing the progress of the Swiss-Romanian Cooperation Programme, a partnership aimed at reducing economic and social disparities and fostering bilateral expertise.

Strategic dialogues in Bucharest

The mission kicked off with a serie of high-level technical meetings in Bucharest, where the Swiss delegation met with the National Coordination Unit within the Ministry of Finance as well as with the Programme Operators in charge of the programmes financed by SDC. Those sessions provided a platform to discuss the current status of implementation and the strategic alignment of thematic programs (e.g Social Inclusion, Research, Health, Justice, Dual Education, Civic Engagement).

Field spotlight: Community Policing in Slatina

On March 26, the delegation traveled to Slatina for a specialized site visit within the framework of the Internal Affairs Programme, which is a cornerstone of the Swiss-Romanian cooperation in the area of public safety and security.

At the "Nicolae Golescu" Police Training and Development Center, which benefitted from Swiss support under the first Swiss Enlargement Contribution (2009-2019), exchanges took place with the stakeholders involved in one of the Programme's initiatives, co-financed by Switzerland and focusing, among others, on the community policing concept, which is supported by the Swiss SAVATAN Police Academy and the NGO Coginta.

Looking ahead

As the Swiss-Romanian Cooperation Programme is currently under implementation, these visits remain vital for maintaining transparency and ensuring that the expertise of both countries are leveraged.
