The EEA is an internationally recognized strategic planning, methodology and certification system. With a history spanning over 30 years in Europe, Switzerland is considered the pioneer and founding country of the EEA, operating it locally as "Energiestadt". The EEA is a tool helping local governments to develop energy efficiency strategies and translate them into concrete investments, with a focus on rational energy use and the integration of renewable energy sources.

In Romania, the EEA program offers a number of clear benefits for both local authorities and citizens. At local level, the EEA provides a structured methodology, the opportunity for European-level benchmarking, and international recognition through EEA or EEA Gold certification. In addition, local authorities receive ongoing technical support and access to a European network of best practices.

The launching event brought together the Romanian Minister of European Investments and Projects (Dragos Pîslaru), the Head of the Swiss Contribution Office and Deputy Head of Mission Giacomo Solari, as well as important actors involved in the EEA initiative.
