- The replacement of 3816 old mercury- or sodium-vapor lamps with LED lamps, using the existing poles and cables;
- The introduction of a telemanagement system to monitor and optimize the operation of the street lighting system.
- The improvement of the light quality (luminous yield, uniformity and concentration of lighting). The luminous yield shall notably be increased from less than 45% to 100%. Through the intervention, the street lighting system of Suceava will be put in conformity with the Romanian and EU norms.
- A reduction of electricity consumption of the street lighting system through improved energy efficiency related to:
o the replacement of old lamps with LED (expected savings 1814 MWh/year i.e. 63% of the concerned lamps' consumption)
o the introduction of a telemanagment system (expected savings 273 MWh/year) - A reduction of energy and maintenance costs related to the energy savings, longer lifetime and higher reliability of the LED lamps and new distribution boxes. The expected annual cost savings are CHF 157'000 (on energy) and CHF 120'000 (on maintenance and repairs).
- The avoidance of 1271 tons of CO2 emissions/year through the introduction of LED (plus 191 tons of CO2 emissions/year related to the telemanagement system).

Under the Swiss-Romanian Cooperation Programme the European Energy Award is being introduced in four Romanian pilot cities. The European Energy Award is a quality management and certification system for municipalities committed to sustainable municipal energy, climate and transport policies. It is based on the label “Energy City”, which has originally been developed in Switzerland. Suceava, a city of 92'000 inhabitants located in the North-East of Romania, is one of the four selected pilot cities. Based on its Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP) it has identified the modernization of the street lighting, which is currently responsible for a substantial part of the energy consumption in Suceava, as a priority infrastructure project. Although the public lighting system of Suceava covers the entire network of city streets, it is partially ineffective and energetically inefficient, notably because of aging cables (40-50 years old) in certain districts. |
| Obiettivi |
The goals of the project are to improve the quality and energy efficiency of the street lighting system in Suceava in order to enhance road safety and security as well as to save energy and costs. |
| Gruppi target |
The direct beneficiary of the project is the Municipality of Suceava who will save costs and thereby be able to release funds for additional improvements and energy saving measures. |
