Dual Education: good practice examples

Switzerland has supported the international conference "Challenges of implementation of dual education in contemporary schools" held in Užice. The conference was an opportunity for companies from five industrial sectors to get acquainted with the perspectives of dual education and some of the good practice examples of dual education.

The Technical school from Uzice organized the conference in May 2018 for  companies that already participate in dual education and those which plan to participate. The event was attended by representatives of 32 companies in the field of metal, wood, textile, graphic and stone industries.

The event was opened by Dr. Gabrijela Grujić, Assistant to the Minister for Dual and Entrepreneurial Education, who pointed out the significance of developing dual education in the Republic of Serbia. The Deputy Mayor of Uzice, Nemanja Nesic, emphasized the importance of dual education for economic development. During the conference, several examples of good practice from Serbia were presented, along with experiences from Slovenia and Germany.

The working group produced conclusions of the discussion, which among other, underline that students should be trained for work. Hence, it is necessary for students to learn in the real environment, where school workshops are replaced by production facilities. Furthermore, the importance of a flexible legislative framework that allows for applicability of good models of dual education was emphasized. At the same time, companies are expected to support the development of new educational profiles according to market needs. Finally, the inclusion of a specialist in occupational medicine during the medical examination of students was assessed as significant, in order to obtain a clear and real insight into student's health.

The conference was organized within the framework of the project "Development of the private sector in South Serbia". The project was implemented in cooperation with the Regional Agency for Economic Development and Entrepreneurship of the Pcinja District (VEEDA). The importance of this project is that within one of its activities, it has helped establishing models of high-school education where the curricula is defined jointly between companies and schools and subsequently approved by the Ministry of Education.
