Best experiences in supporting children from vulnerable groups

Local news, 20.08.2018

Since 2003, the Swiss Government has supported 43 local communities in implementing the Joint program on Roma and marginalized groups inclusion. The Program reached 57’000 children and 14’000 parents and contributed to an increased enrolment of Roma children and children with disabilities in school, as well as a decrease of the drop-out rate. After the successful completion of the Program in May 2018, these communities are capable to continue supporting the most vulnerable groups. The best experiences gained during the past 15 years can be found in the publication of Collection of good practices.

The Collection of good practices by the Red Cross branches in Serbia marks the end of the successful Joint program on Roma and marginalized groups inclusion. The publication illustrates the most successful activities within the Program such as: creation of the Serbian-Roma dictionary, a workshop on human trafficking, the inclusion of elderly in activities with children from vulnerable groups, the use of music and horses in therapeutic approach to children and many more. The publication illustrates the ways in which 43 local communities in Serbia have participated in the Program and shows their built-in resources for further support to children after completion of the Program.

The Program activities contributed to the increase of enrolment of Roma children and children with disabilities in school, as well as to the decrease of drop-out rate. This has been achieved by supporting children’s psycho-social development, development of tolerance and inclusive environment by promoting tolerance, acceptance of diversity and respect for personal and cultural identity. The Program had also encouraged the development of models in the local communities that are supporting inclusion of children from vulnerable groups.

Supported by the Swiss Confederation, the Joint Program is one of the most meaningful programs in the field of inclusion in the Republic of Serbia. The Red Cross of Serbia as one of the key partners implemented activities across the country. Tailor made support was provided to local communities and in response to the needs of beneficiaries – children ages 4 to 14. As a result, more than 25’000 of them have been included in the education system and completed elementary school. The Government of Switzerland supported the Program in the total amount of EUR 13.5 million during the period 2003-2018.
