Visit of Federal Councillor Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf to Singapore, 3 February 2015

Event for Swiss nationals who live abroad

Federal Councillor and Head of the Federal Department of Finance Mrs. Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf visited Singapore on the 3th of February to deepen the relations between Singapore and Switzerland in the field of finance and tax issues. Federal Councillor Widmer-Schlumpf met with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Tharman Shanmugaratnam and MAS Deputy Managing Director Jacqueline Loh to discuss both bilateral and multilateral questions of mutual interest. Singapore President Dr. Tony Tan Keng Yam received Federal Councillor Widmer-Schlumpf for a courtesy call. This call was an opportunity to emphasize the excellent relations between Switzerland and Singapore, who have maintained diplomatic relations since 1967. Besides the official meetings, Federal Councillor Widmer-Schlumpf also exchanged views with leading executive representatives from the Swiss financial industry in Singapore and visited the Singapore branch of the Swiss National Bank. The National Bank office in Singapore was established in 2013 in order to take adequate account of the growing foreign exchange reserves of the National Bank and the increasing importance of the Asia-Pacific region.The Swiss Business Association together with the Swiss Embassy hosted an event for the Swiss business community at the Swiss Club where Federal Councillor Widmer-Schlumpf spoke about the current challenges and opportunities for Switzerland and Europe. Federal Councillor Widmer-Schlumpf also visited the Swiss School, an institution that reflects the successful and growing presence of the Swiss in Singapore.

CEO of Switzerland Global Enterprise, Mr Daniel Kueng, fka Osec, was in Singapore between 2nd and 3rd February 2015, as part of the South East Asian business development mission. During the visit, Mr Kueng met his counterparts, exporters, partners and potential investors. Mr Wolfgang Schanzenbach, S-GE Regional Director for Asia Pacific, was part of the delegation.

Singapore Art Week – great success for Swiss art events

The Embassy of Switzerland was busy supporting Swiss related art events during the Singapore Art Week. On 22 January, Ambassador Thomas Kupfer opened 2 solo exhibitions by Michel Platnic and Armen Agop at Swiss owned Art Plural Gallery. Among more than 300 invited guests attending the event, representatives of the Embassy of Israel and of the Embassy of Egypt were there to support their fellow citizen artists. On the same day, Swiss media mogul Michael Ringier gave an excellent talk on his passion for collecting art at Art Stage. On 23 January, the Embassy of Switzerland in collaboration with Art Stage presented for the first time world-wide, Patricia Chen’s new documentary “Uli Sigg: China’s Art Missionary. After the screening, guests had the opportunity to ask questions to the Swiss art collector, followed by a cocktail reception.

Ambassador Kupfer invited Theater Hora’s cast and crew as well as invited guests to a dinner reception at his Residence. This evening was the occasion for a get-together with the Swiss actors who came to Singapore to present Disabled Theater, performed for 4 consecutive evenings at the Singapore International Festival of Arts. The performance was very well received in the press as well as by the audience, which made the group “excellent ambassadors” of their cause, and as one of the actress says on the stage: “I have Down syndrome. So what?”
