The Embassy of Switzerland in Singapore understands that Singapore authorities are about to execute two Malaysian nationals this week, Mr. Nagaenthran Dharmalingam and Mr. Datchinamurthy Kataiah, both sentenced for drug trafficking.

Together with the Delegation of the European Union, the diplomatic missions of the EU Member States and the diplomatic mission of Norway, the Swiss Embassy already issued a statement on 8 November 2021 calling on Singapore authorities to halt the execution of Mr. Nagaenthran Dharmalingam. The Embassy herewith repeats this call and extends it mutatis mutandis to Mr. Datchinamurthy Kataiah.

Switzerland firmly opposes the death penalty. As the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has stated, the use of the death penalty for drug-related offences is incompatible with international human rights law. The same is the case for executions of mentally disabled persons.
