Agri-Processing Resource Efficiency
The Agri-Processing Resource Efficiency (APRE) project implemented by IFC in South Africa aims at improving water use efficiency and productivity as well as energy use among companies in the agri-processing industry, in order to reduce operational costs and mitigate climate change risks.

Water scarcity is severely affecting South Africa. In particular Western Cape is facing its worst water shortage in more than hundred years. There is an increased awareness among the South African authorities of the challenges related to water supply and demand. The agri-processing sector is a key sector of South Africa?s economy (GDP contribution of 4.3 percent) that needs to reduce its costs and optimize its production processes (including an efficient use of resources) to retain and increase its competitiveness.
Support the private sector to improve their water use productivity and efficiency, thereby preserve resouces and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
1) Innovative technologies, processes and systems that support water and energy efficiency by companies in the agri-processing sector are implemented
2) Regulatory and policy environment in place that incentivizes resource efficiency in the agri-processing sector
3) Increased awareness among stakeholders on improved resource efficiency in the agri-processing sector
1.1) Customized advice to firms on water and related energy efficiency improvements provided
1.2) Detailed stakeholder mapping and needs assessment carried out to identify intervention areas with highest potential to improve efficiency and reduce water scarcity risks
2.1) Targeted interventions to improve the policy and regulatory environment, including recommendations and guidelines developed
2.2) Key stakeholders from public and private sector are engaged on key policy and regulatory issues as well as other aspects of the project
3.1) Best practices, case studies and other knowledge materials disseminated amongst stakeholders through activities such as events and circulation of materials
3.2) Knowledge materials including tools, benchmarks, best practices, case studies and lessons learned developed
