Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa (FTTSA) has established since 2001 the world's first and still only tourism Fair Trade certification program which has the potential to become the basis for a future worldwide Fair Trade Label for travel and tourism. With defined standards of supporting disadvantaged producers and staff along the whole supply chain and of paying a fair price and fairtrade premium for social development in the destination, Fair Trade Travel introduces a promising framework for fair and sustainable development in tourism.

Contexte Tourism is an important sector for economic and social development as well as biodiversity conservation in most developing countries, and the need for tourism growth to be managed sustainably is widely recognized. However, sustainable tourism certification initiatives currently in operation around the world lack the public recognition needed for real market impact, which in turn limits the benefits accruing to businesses, destinations, communities and other stakeholders.
Objectifs Increased income from tourism for South Africa/southern Africa
Effets à moyen terme FTTSA ensures the strengthening of the FTT system, advocates for its outreach and engages in market development activities. Outsourced service providers are responsible for managing the certification scheme (FLO-Cert) and providing business development services to enterprises seeking to enter the FTT system. Demand-side activities are implemented with the support of tourism boards and associations, tourism advocacy organisations in source markets, Fairtrade organisations, SIPPO and tour operators.
Résultats

Principaux résultats attendus:   The project pursues five main goals: 1) Increase demand in international and domestic tourism source markets-2) Increase and diversify the supply of FTT-certified products-3) Apply FTT standard and principles to tourism value chains (tour packages)-4) Establish the basis for a global FTT system (outreach)-5) Create a sustainable FTTSA organisation.
