IOM / Bentiu POC Improvement and Site Expansion

Projet terminé

The Bentiu Protection of Civilian (PoC) site has flooded repeatedly throughout the rainy season in 2014, creating dangerous and unliveable conditions for the over 40,000 people seeking shelter there. As the PoC is expected to remain populated into next year’s – 2015 - rainy season, it is essential that every effort is made to improve the living conditions within the PoC. The city of Bentiu is situated on a front line, and thus particularly exposed.

Contexte

On 15th of December 2013, armed clashes quickly evolved along tribal lines and caused an ongoing humanitarian crisis. The current crisis has led to devastating humanitarian consequences and the lives of millions of citizens have been shattered. Fighting and insecurity uprooted about 2 million people, who fled their homes and either became Internally Displaced People (IDP’s) or refugees in neighbouring countries (about 600’000 people by December, 2014)

Objectifs

to improve living conditions of internally displaced persons by facilitating the effective provision of protection and services in camps and camp-like settings, advocate for durable solutions and ensure organized closure and phase-out of camps upon the IDPs’ relocation, return, resettlement or local integration.

Groupes cibles

IDPs, Bentiu PoC site

Effets à moyen terme

Improved living conditions within the PoC, Bentiu, the most populated and worst-off site (due to its topography). The PoC site, Bentiu is likely to remain densely populated all through 2015.
