South Sudan, FAO, Improving nutrition and resilience in Warrap

Progetto concluso

With an unfolding internal armed conflict, the food security situation in South Sudan is severely deteriorating. Due to insecurity and displacement, many people were not able to attend their fields and gardens during the planting season, which will affect harvests towards the end of the year. Under the goal to boost sustainable agriculture, the main objective of this project is to increase the resilience (food security, livelihoods and income) of 1350 households and to improve production, food availability and access of nutritious food sources in Warrap State. By targeting an area that is affected by food insecurity but is relatively stable, the project aims at improving food security in the area and reducing the dependency on food aid.

Contesto

On 15th of December 2013, armed clashes quickly evolved along tribal lines and caused an ongoing humanitarian crisis. Continued disruption of market and livestock, cattle rustling, humanitarian access constraints and loss of assets have exacerbated the food security situation in the country. In Warrap state, food insecurity has already been high before the newly erupted crisis. More than two thirds of households in the State are food insecure and are likely to continue to be either severely or moderately food-insecure throughout this year. Next to life saving Nutrition and food distribution projects, resilience building is required for a sustainable improvement in food security.
