Swiss experts to UN-Agencies in the frame of the Syria crisis

The ongoing violence in Syria has lead to the displacement of millions of civilians. As of September 2013, an estimated 4.25 million people are internally displaced inside Syria and 2 million people are registered or waiting for their registration with UNHCR in neighbouring Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon, Iraq and Egypt.

UNHCR – Cash Assistance for most vulnerable IDPs in Syria and Syrian refugees in Jordan [BSL], including QIPs in Jordan [PRO]

Many Syrians have had to leave their homes on very short notice, rendering them in high need of basic domestic items, shelter assistance and protection. This project supports the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) cash assistance projects that ensure the effectiveness of humanitarian aid as people prioritize their own needs. Further, this project fosters protection activities that promote peaceful consistence between the Syrian refugees’ community and the Jordanian community.

WFP Emergency Food Assistance to people affected by unrest in Syria

Due to a gradual deterioration of the food security situation in Syria, which includes increases in food and fuel prices as well as a reduction in agricultural and livestock production, the UN estimates that 4 million people are food insecure throughout the country. WFP estimates that 3.3 million people are IDPs and an additional 0.7 million are highly vulnerable residents in rural and urban areas. In response, WFP – in partnership with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) and 19 other local organizations– will provide monthly food assistance to 4 million people in all 14 governorates of Syria.

First Allocation (Cash) of SDC Funding (Europe and Mediterranean Region Division) to WFP Operations in 2013

In line with the Good Humanitarian Donorship (GHD) principles, Switzerland recognizes the necessity of predictable and flexible funding for responding to changing needs in humanitarian crises. SDC funding to WFP operations allows the World Food Programme (WFP) to respond proactively and to provide immediate food assistance in life-threatening situations and underfunded emergencies.

SDC funding to UNICEF emergency programmes in 10 underfunded emergency situations allows UNICEF to better plan its assistance programmes and proactively respond to situations as needed.

OCHA, Contribution to Field Activities 2013 in Syria and Yemen

OCHA is responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure coherent response to emergencies and facilitates the work of operational humanitarian agencies in the field. SDC aims to support OCHA in delivering its core functions in humanitarian coordination, advocacy and policy development. Therefore, SDC seeks to provide support to OCHA field offices in relevant humanitarian contexts, in line with SDC geographic and thematic priorities.

SYRIA- UNRWA- Emergency Cash Assistance to Conflict-Affected Palestinian Refugees in Syria

The ongoing crisis in Syria has negatively impacted the lives of more 225'000 Palestine refugees, causing displacement and a significant deterioration of their humanitarian situation. Food and non food items remain a priority for the displaced refugees. UNRWA proposes to support some 20'500 Palestine refugees with cash assistance what will help the refugees to meet their immediate basic needs and strengthen their ability to cope better with the current circumstances.

FAO - Emergency Assistance to poor herder families in Syria (BSL)

Large numbers of rural people of the central, coastal, eastern and south governorates have lost their farming business and/or livestock due to the ongoing crisis in Syria since the 15th March 2011. The ongoing political unrest has directly affected rural people's livelihoods, as they are not able to attend their business or marketing their products. Many rural people at eastern and north eastern governorates have lost their livelihood bases and/or livestock totally or partially due to the ongoing crisis coupled with the drought situation in past years.
