Prevention of Domestic Violence in Tajikistan

Domestic violence is widespread in Tajik society (70% of women experience domestic violence in their life). Despite the adoption of the law on domestic violence in 2013, the Government lacks coordinated mechanisms for its implementation. In the exit phase the project will shift from NGO based service provision towards supporting the state coordination mechanisms, the establishment of an effective public referral system providing services to the victims, and public awareness activities with a focus on contributing to behavioural changes.

The high mountainous area of the Pamirs are highly prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes, landslides, avalanches, draughts, glacial lakes outbursts and other earth mass movements. The project will strengthen the communities' and government’s capacity to analyze and manage risks and effectively employ natural resources in a coordinated manner to contribute to increased protection against natural hazards, reducing populations’ vulnerability to natural shocks and to increase their overall resilience.

Due to frequent occurrence of natural disasters the Government has endorsed number of laws and regulations, and developed relevant structure for DRM. However, the disaster risk governance requires further improvement. The project will assist the Government to expand approaches to risk governance at the national level involving the Government, civil society and the international community and improving local risk governance using risk assessments and risk informed land use planning targeting land owners and users.

Civil Registry System Reform in Tajikistan

This project aims to assist the Ministry of Justice in its efforts to develop an efficient and effective civil registry System accessible and affordable for the population, including vulnerable and those living in remote areas. The current system faces challenges related to high bureaucracy, low professional capacities, lack of cooperation amongst local authorities, outdated paper registration system, which are significantly diminishing its capacities to provide quality services to the population and vital statistics for the State planning.

Medical Education Reform in Tajikistan

Switzerland has been supporting Medical Education Reforms in Tajikistan since 2009 with the aim to ensure availability of appropriately trained, well-deployed and motivated workers in the health sector. With support of the project the standards of undergraduate education have been revised and learning environment along with the teaching process at medical schools have been significantly improved. The current phase of the project will target quality of postgraduate éducation and unite all levels of medical education in one global continuum.

Cross-border Cooperation for Sustainable Peace and Development in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan

The relations between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are characterized by an increasing number ot cross-border tensions caused by unfinished border demarcation and disputes on access to natural resources. The authorities recognize the risk of escalation into an open "inter-ethnic conflict", but lack resources and capacities to conduct peace-building activities at community level. The project is designed to foster cooperation and linkages in the cross-border village clusters situated in Kyrgyzstan and in Tajikistan.

In response to the explicit demand of the five Central Asian States, and building on over 20 years of cooperation in the field of water, SDC facilitates transboundary water resources cooperation consistent with the Blue Peace approach implemented in the Middle-East and at the global level through the establishment of a High Level Dialogue Platform, the promotion of sustainable water practices as well as capacity building of a new generation of water professionals and champions.

Im Distrikt Muminabad in Tadschikistan vermindert die Schweiz das Risiko von Umweltkatastrophen und fördert ein ganzheitliches Management der Wasser-Einzugsgebiete Obishur und Chukurak. Eine nachhaltige Vieh- und Landwirtschaft, betrieben durch die lokale Bevölkerung und gestützt durch lokale Behörden, schafft dafür notwendige Voraussetzungen.

Community Based Family Medicine in Tajikistan

Tajikistan is the poorest country in CIS region, and only 2.2% of the country's $6.9 billion GDP is allocated to the healthcare sector. Malnutrition and waterborne diseases are the main factors contributing to the child mortality rate (the highest among CIS countries).The present project will contribute to the ongoing health reform implemented by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, by improving the access of the targeted population (400'000) to quality family medicine services provided in the local Primary Health Care Centres.

Rural Water Supply and Sanitation in the Fergana Valley, Tajikistan

The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) was engaged in the Fergana valley both in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan with the Regional Rural Water Supply and Sanitation project since 2007. Due to difficulties in implementing regional projects in Central Asia, SDC decided in 2012 to develop two separate country projects with a regional view. The overall objective of the project is to improve the rural population’s health and livelihood with sustainable safe drinking water and sanitation facilities as well as with the development of training for better household hygienic behavior.
