Improving Access to Basic Health Care in Mountain Regions of Tajikistan - Rasht Valley

Projekt abgeschlossen

Tajikistan is the poorest among the former Soviet Union countries with a GDP per capita of US $ 820 in 2010. Only 2% of GDP is allocated to the health care sector. Through the rehabilitation and equipment of deteriorated health infrastructure, the project improves access to health services and thus ultimately contributes to improving the health status of the population in the project areas. By focusing on the most neglected and fragile areas, Switzerland supports the efforts of re-connecting the communities and the State and thus reducing conflict potential and strengthening stability in Tajikistan.

Hintergrund

Tajikistan is a country marked by fragility patterns, among them regional disparities and some mountainous parts of the country being neglected and very poor. Both the Rasht Valley located in the north – eastern part of Tajikistan and Gorno-Badakshon Autonomous Oblast (GBAO), the south –eastern area of Tajikistan bordering Afghanistan, have in the recent pastbeen afflicted by political instability and insecurity. Tajikistan is currently in the transition process from a Soviet-era specialist based system to a family medicine based primary health care system, which is more accessible and affordable for the poor. Due to lack of funds, there is a big need for investment in infrastructure of primary health care centres.

    Resultate

    Resultate von früheren Phasen:

N/A Aga Khan has an excellent reputation in Tajikistan and has been able to establish a trust relation with the government and the communities. In the health sector, it has contributed to improve access to quality health services, in particular in the GBAO region. SDC contribution to the Aga Khan project will enable the organisation to expand its intervention in the Rasht Valley.
