On this occasion the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Republic of Tajikistan Mr. Ismatullo Nasredinov received the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Swiss Confederation to Tajikistan (with residence in Astana) Mr. Urs Schmid. At the beginning of the meeting, the parties exchanged the originals of congratulatory letters of the two heads of states and foreign ministers. In her letter to the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, the Swiss President, Mrs Doris Leuthard, specifically stressed her great appreciation for the longstanding friendship between the peoples of Tajikistan and Switzerland. Ms Walburga Roos, Director of the Swiss Cooperation Office in Tajikistan also presented at the meeting.
Switzerland’s cooperation began after Tajikistan became independent and joined the Swiss constituency group at the Bretton Woods Institutions and the Global Environment Facility.
In 1998 the Office of Swiss Development Cooperation opened its doors here in Dushanbe, establishing a continuous presence of Switzerland in Tajikistan.
In the framework of its development cooperation program, Switzerland is investing every year almost 20 million USD in projects aimed at supporting the government of Tajikistan in its efforts to improve the socio-economic conditions of its people.
The two sides highly assessed the current level of bilateral relations and exchanged views on further strengthening the mutually beneficial dialogue between Tajikistan and Switzerland in the political, economic, cultural and humanitarian spheres.
