On April 6, Avicenna Tajik State Medical University (TSMU) hosted a special event devoted to the World Health Day in the Tajik capital. Presentations regarding the SDC supported health-related projects and information stands for visitors were shown to the 5th and 6th grades medical students, teachers and nurses. Clinical skills equipment and training materials that were donated to TSMU were also on display.

The event was a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the central role of Family Medicine in the provision of personal, comprehensive and continuing health care for all of our patients. It was also a chance to celebrate the progress being made in Primary Health Care (PHC) in Tajikistan and the contributions of family doctors through SDC’s support to PHC projects under the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute.

During her speech addressed to future doctors, Muazzama Djamalova, SDC Health Domain Senior Specialist emphasized: “The quality of services is determined by three attributes: Knowledge, Skills and Attitude.  Acquire knowledge, develop clinical skills and your moral qualities, be real doctors!”

While the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute that implements SDC’s “Medical Education Reform Project” together with TSMU were responsible for the preparation of the event, all relevant key stakeholders and other institutions including representatives from the government of Tajikistan, civil society and donor agencies actively participated in the celebration by sharing their knowledge and insights with the students.

This year Switzerland celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Swiss Cooperation Office in Dushanbe. Within the framework of a comprehensive cooperation and development program, Switzerland has supported the People and the Government of Tajikistan in reforming the health, water and natural resource management sectors, in increasing access to justice and in facilitating the country’s transition towards a market economy. Switzerland invests approximately 20 Million USD per year in projects implemented in all parts of Tajikistan.
