Dushanbe Conference Prepares Tajikistan for Key Climate Action at COP29

October 14, 2024- Dushanbe hosted the Pre-COP29 Conference titled “Roadmap for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) COP-29 for Tajikistan”. 

The event was organized by Agency for Hydrometeorology and the Committee of Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, in collaboration with the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH).

This year's event received support from the "Adaptive and Resilient Communities in their Habitat (ARCH)" project, a collaborative initiative of the Government of Switzerland and the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat. This notable conference gathered over 70 participants, comprising government representatives, international organizations, and climate experts. National Determined Contributions (NDCs) were also involved in this event, where stakeholders engaged in discussions and presentations aimed at bolstering Tajikistan's position ahead of COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Building on the outcomes of previous COP discussions, the conference emphasized Tajikistan’s efforts to tackle climate challenges, focusing on climate resilience, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable energy strategies. Participants discussed the country's National Determined Contributions (NDCs), aiming to strengthen Tajikistan's climate plans before COP29. Key topics included reducing emissions, improving disaster preparedness, and ensuring energy security.

Bahodur Sheralizoda, the Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection in his opening speech mentioned that “This conference is a great opportunity to showcase our progress, exchange knowledge with global experts, and reaffirm our commitment to a resilient and sustainable future. We believe that through collaboration with local and global experts, we can make significant strides in mitigating climate change and enhancing our preparedness for future challenges.”

Fayzmamad Davlatbekov , Supervisor, Climate Change Coordination of the Operational Research and Technical Support Department stated that “The Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH) has been working with the Government of Tajikistan intending to achieve the goal of a resilient Tajikistan where communities are safe from the effects of climate change and other natural disasters. By fostering collaboration between local communities, governments, and international partners, we aim to create more resilient habitats that are better prepared for the impacts of climate-related disasters.”

The Pre-COP29 Climate Conference in Dushanbe underscored Tajikistan’s commitment to addressing climate change through resilience, adaptation, and sustainable energy strategies. The event not only facilitated meaningful discussions among key stakeholders but also reinforced the importance of collective action in achieving global climate goals.
