Improving Access to Basic Health Care in Mountain Regions of Tajikistan - Rasht Valley
Tajikistan is the poorest among the former Soviet Union countries with a GDP per capita of US $ 820 in 2010. Only 2% of GDP is allocated to the health care sector. Through the rehabilitation and equipment of deteriorated health infrastructure, the project improves access to health services and thus ultimately contributes to improving the health status of the population in the project areas. By focusing on the most neglected and fragile areas, Switzerland supports the efforts of re-connecting the communities and the State and thus reducing conflict potential and strengthening stability in Tajikistan.

| Contexte |
Tajikistan is a country marked by fragility patterns, among them regional disparities and some mountainous parts of the country being neglected and very poor. Both the Rasht Valley located in the north – eastern part of Tajikistan and Gorno-Badakshon Autonomous Oblast (GBAO), the south –eastern area of Tajikistan bordering Afghanistan, have in the recent pastbeen afflicted by political instability and insecurity. Tajikistan is currently in the transition process from a Soviet-era specialist based system to a family medicine based primary health care system, which is more accessible and affordable for the poor. Due to lack of funds, there is a big need for investment in infrastructure of primary health care centres. |
| Objectifs |

The project will cover 180 rural communities and Khorog city with a total population of approximately 64’800 people as direct beneficiaries. The total population of the project areas is about 300’000 people. |
