Strengthening Smallholders through MVIWATA
Over the last 21 years small scale farmer men and women have organized themselves from village to national level in MVIWATA, the Tanzanian Network of Small Scale Farmers’ Groups. SDC’s program contribution to MVIWATA aims at strengthening the capacity of the network to empower its members technically, economically and politically in farming matters in order to contribute to independent problem solving and trigger more pro-poor agricultural sector policies and growth.

| Background |
Approximately 90 per cent of Tanzania's poor people still live in rural areas. Agriculture is the main source of income for the majority of the population (75%). In the last years the GDP has averaged a 7% growth. The agricultural sector has however not benefited from this momentum as much as other more urban sectors. Smallholders’ advocacy capacity is still low while the sector is over-planned by an intricate system of national and regional strategies, programs and policies, which are implemented in ways smallholder farmers lose. |
| Objectives |
Improved smallholder farmers’ capacity to organize themselves in order to defend their interests and to increase their incomes. |

| Results |
Expected results:
Results from previous phases: The entry phase has been utilized to identify constraints in MVIWATA’s organization and management. The findings of the risk assessment clearly pointed out which problems to adress and how to prioritize them. Particular attention will be paid to the financial management, the leaderhip skills development and to the monitoring and evaluation. A baseline study and the development of a Result Based M&E system are currently on-going. |
