The HIV prevention programme of the Southern Africa AIDS Trust (SAT) will strengthen the capacities of communities in mapping and addressing HIV and Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) needs of especially adolescents, young people and women in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania, Botswana and Malawi. It will support the ministries of Health and Education at country level, and advocate for regional policies and frameworks at SADC level to improve integrated service-delivery of HIV and SRHR.

Grow Africa: Support Farmers’ Engagement

Grow Africa, a partnership agreement co-convened by the African Union Commission, NEPAD Agency and World Economic Forum (WEF) has supported since 2011 the implementation of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) to accelerate responsible investment into agriculture. SDC’s contribution will be targeted to increasing smallholders’ integration into commercial value chains of staple crops for domestic and regional markets to contribute to poverty eradication and improved food security.

Strengthening Seed and Output Markets in Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Swaziland (SAMP2)

This project will increase food security by developing the capacity of smallholder farmers to locally produce improved seed and stimulate local formal and informal seed markets. To achieve this, the project will work to remove barriers to accessing inputs and agronomic training; develop farmer and community organizational skills to meet seed production standards; and promote efficient strategies for seed processing, packaging, marketing and informal exchanges.

Support to Tanzania’s Election Cycle 2013 – 2016 (STEC 13-16)

The proposed intervention supports the Tanzanian Electoral Management Bodies (EMBs) and the media in Tanzania for the Constitutional referendum 2014 and local and general elections in 2014/2015. EMBs will be supported for institutional reforms and capacity strengthening to guarantee free and credible elections. The media will be strengthened in its role as watchdog and citizen informer to provide for impartial political reporting.

Health research for policy making: The Ifakara Health Institute (IHI)

This project aims to improve evidence based policy making in Tanzania. It will allow the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and partners to better measure the impact of public spending in the health sector, and improve the use of evidence in policy making, for more effective health results. SDC will further strengthen IHI, the only private and independent health research institute, in developing and sustaining district-based data collection.

Strengthening Smallholders through MVIWATA

Over the last 21 years small scale farmer men and women have organized themselves from village to national level in MVIWATA, the Tanzanian Network of Small Scale Farmers’ Groups. SDC’s program contribution to MVIWATA aims at strengthening the capacity of the network to empower its members technically, economically and politically in farming matters in order to contribute to independent problem solving and trigger more pro-poor agricultural sector policies and growth.

Safeguard Young People – Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRHR)

The UNFPA Safeguard Young People Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights/HIV (SRHR) programme will contribute to the reduction of HIV infections and improved sexual and reproductive health status of young women and men aged 10 to 24 in 8 Southern African countries1. UNFPA will scale up SRHR/HIV prevention models in order to equip young people with knowledge, skills and values to protect themselves from HIV infections and capacitate member states to improve the legislative environment to address young people’s health issues.

Seed and Knowledge Initiative (SKI)

The project contributes to strengthening and consolidating local knowledge and practices on seeds for better resilience. In parallel, research is conducted on community seed systems and the interface between the formal and informal seed sectors. This will inform advocacy strategies and influence the policy-making and scientific narrative for improved seed and food security in the SADC region (Zimbabwe, Zambia, Swaziland, Mozambique, South Africa).

Advocating for Agro-Biodiversity

This project supports small-scale farmer and farmer support organizations in the region in their efforts to foster democratic debate over legal frameworks having an impact on food security, and more specifically: agro-biodiversity , farmers’ rights to use, save and exchange seeds, and the diverse forms of knowledge farmers develop and maintain. This project also helps farmers in defining the role they want to see State institutions play in protecting all of the above.

Regional Vulnerability Assessment and Analysis (RVAA)

The project supports Southern African Development Community (SADC) and its member states in establishing and updating systems for vulnerability assessments and analysis (VAA) providing reliable information on food security situation and related conditions to determine appropriate short-term interventions and long-term policy and projects planning. The project will establish VAA systems in countries without such analyses, update existing systems to integrate climate change with food security and develop capacities for VAA.
