Forging democracy through regional radio

01.08.2015
- 30.11.2016
After Tunisia's revolution of January 2011, the SDC assigned Fondation Hirondelle the mandate of professionalising Radio Tunisienne, the national radio broadcaster. One of its regional stations, Radio Gafsa, received advice and financial support to become a source of quality public information featuring independent content. The experience has since been replicated at four other regional stations.

Vocational education and training in Tunisia – Objective: employment

15.07.2012
- 31.12.2015
Youth unemployment – a major factor in the revolutions that shook the countries of North Africa in 2011 – is a consequence of poor employability in the labour market. An SDC project aims to enhance vocational education and training in Tunisia. In particular, young university graduates are being given the opportunity to acquire practical skills by undertaking internships in "practice firms". Because they have proven so successful, Switzerland’s activities have been extended until 2020.

Switzerland brings to North Africa its internationally recognised expertise in security sector reform
01.11.2011
- 31.12.2016
The uprisings in North Africa at the beginning of 2011 were directed to a considerable extent against the security forces on which the dictatorial regimes of Egypt, Libya and Tunisia have relied for decades. There is an urgent need for reorientation of the armed forces of the state – army, police and security services – to ensure a successful democratic transition. Thanks to the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of the Armed Forces (DCAF) Switzerland is able to offer internationally recognised expertise in this area. Partner countries receive on request rapid, tailor-made support in carrying out security sector reform. Despite a number of similarities the challenges in Tunisia, Morocco, Libya and Egypt are quite different.

Program for the Support of Electoral Processes in Tunisia (PSPET) – Phase II
01.12.2018
- 29.02.2020
The program contributes to outcome 1.2 of the SDC’s 2017-2020 strategy. This intermediary phase of the program would contribute to leverage the resilience of independent electoral authorities for the successful organization of the 2019 national elections and beyond and strengthen citizen engagement in decision making through effective outreach and civic education. It would also permit for a closer assessment of the field to prepare for the phasing out of the program moving forward.
