Sustainable enhancement of SESU’s capabilities in Eastern Ukraine
Through the project, Fondation Suisse de Déminage (FSD) builds a hub for the maintenance and repair of mechanized demining vehicles (MDV). Furthermore, it equips SESU (State Emergency Service of Ukraine) mechanical teams with drones or other systems which will support efficient clearance operations.

| Background |
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has led to large-scale contamination of territories and settlements with explosive objects, including those prohibited by international conventions. The total area of the territories currently subject to identify hazardous areas is about 139,000 km2. The daily use of mechanized demining vehicles (MDV) requires constant maintenance, repair work, and the creation of a reserve of spare parts. However, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU) does not posses a second-line maintenance facility to support operations. |
| Objectives |
The project is on the request of SESU and part of the DREAM pipeline. FSD increases the operational efficiency of the used equipment by setting up a workshop. This initiative leads to faster decontamination of affected areas, reduces civilian casualties from explosive remnants of the war, and enhances safety for SESU demining personnel and civilians. |
| Medium-term outcomes |
The internally operating maintenance facility reduces running costs by eliminating the need to outsource maintenance to external suppliers and avoids reliance on slower commercial service providers With the augmented workshop by FSD, SESU can deliver high quality demining in Ukraine’s most conflict affected regions for now and also the years to come Furthermore, the introduction of advanced remote technologies further improves the quality, efficiency, and safety of clearance operations, particularly in high-risk regions in Eastern Ukraine. |
| Results |
Expected results: The project delivers several tangible outputs such as the establishment of a second-line repair workshop in Poltava In addition, FSD trains SESU staff in the maintenance and repair of demining machines. The project directly impacts 13 workshop staff through training, creates 9 jobs, and 16 staff members in mechanical teams via the innovation work strand The integration of advanced technologies such as drones and remote sensing tools is foreseen Additionally, spare parts will be provided for two years |
