Background

Russia's military aggression has led to the massive destruction of numerous homes belonging to Ukrainian citizens. In consequence, millions of people have been displaced from their homes and have become IDPs. These people need safe housing and a stable livelihood. The Sumy region borders on Russia, and although people are fleeing from areas near the front line, many are still staying in the region. As of mid-May 2025, approximately 98,000 IDPs resided in the Sumy region.

Objectives

The modular houses from DM Bau directly address Ukraine’s urgent wartime housing crisis while contributing to the country’s long-term objectives of energy efficiency and sustainable recovery. Having accommodation near cities facilitates the social integration of IDPs and enhances their access to employment, healthcare, and education. The project supports the provision of housing solutions that would otherwise remain postponed due to limited municipal and national budgets under wartime conditions.

Medium-term outcomes

Internally displaced families and professionals will be accommodated in durable, energy-efficient modular homes, promoting stability and facilitating integration into the host communities

This housing solution ensures access to employment opportunities, education, and essential healthcare services

Results

Expected results:

Up to 90 modular homes (with floorspaces of 60#m# and 85m2) will be built across five communities, starting with a 10-home pilot project in Bochechky

The modular units are constructed by using locally sourced materials and will be constructed in line with Swiss sustainability standards

Additional jobs will be created through local employment
