Lecture

Flyer Lecture Mr. Bertie Ahern
Flyer Lecture Mr. Bertie Ahern

In the framework of the Kyiv International Lectures Series Mr. Bertie Ahern will address questions such as:

- The principles for sustainable conflict settlement

- An inclusive peace process – roles of political parties, civil society and ex-combatants

- The multi-level structure of the Good Friday Agreement

- The experience of decommissioning of armed groups, amnesty and police reform.

Patrick Bartholomew "Bertie" Ahern, served as Prime Minister (Taoiseach) of Ireland from 26 June 1997 to 7 May 2008. Before he became Taoiseach, he served as Minister for Labour (1987–91) and Minister for Finance (1991–94) and as Deputy Prime Minister (Tánaiste) of the Republic of Ireland.

A significant achievement of Mr. Ahern's first term as Prime Minister was his part in the negotiation of the Belfast Agreement, commonly called the Good Friday Agreement, in which the British and Irish Governments and most Northern Irish political parties established an "exclusively peaceful and democratic" framework for power-sharing in Northern Ireland. The agreement was signed on April 1998.

The lecture takes place on Thursday, March 30, 2017 at 6:00 pm, at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (Volodymyrska Street no. 60, Kyiv). After his presentation Mr. Ahern is willing to engage in a discussion with the public. The event will be held in English; simultaneous translation into Ukrainian will be provided. The lecture will be followed by a cocktail reception.
