Ordering civil status documents

Once the total sum due has been calculated the difference will be billed to you or reimbursed

It will generally require at least 30 working days, depending on the  registry office involved, before the order can be filed through the intermediary of the competent Swiss representation.

The Swiss representation reserves the right to adapt the amounts at any time in relation to exchange rate fluctuations.

Documents issued by a Swiss authority normally require diplomatic or consular legalisation or legalisation by apostille prior to their submission to a foreign authority. You will find information on legalisation under the heading Legalisations.

Obtaining British documents of civil status in the UK

Certified copies of British documents of civil status can either be obtained through the authority that issued them or through the General Register Office.

Please note that documents of civil status (birth, marriage, divorce and death) issued more than 6 months before they are submitted may not be accepted.

Documents of civil status issued outside the UK

Should any documents of civil status have been issued outside the United Kingdom, please contact the Regional Consular Centre prior to submitting the documents in order to confirm the correct papers to be provided. Documents of civil status issued in a different country must be legalized by the competent Swiss representation. In some cases, the legalization will be subject to a fee and can take several weeks.
