The Embassy of Switzerland, in collaboration with the National Gallery of Art and the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center, will introduce three of the best movies shown at the Festival del film Locarno, one of the world’s oldest film festivals and one of the highlights of the Swiss cultural life with the participation of the Artistic Director of the Festival and Movie Director of one of the screenings.

“When you sit in the Piazza Grande, waiting for the evening’s screening, you have the feeling that, in some way, you are also part of the action,” said Ambassador Martin Dahinden, and that is exactly the atmosphere the festival brings to the nation’s capital.

The first movie to be shown, The Summer of Flying Fish by Marcela Said, is a dramatic comedy about the conflict between the natives and landowners of European descent in Chile. The film was part of the 2008 Open Doors program, a Festival section supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) which assists directors and producers from countries in the South and the East. The Ambassadors of Switzerland and Chile will give welcoming remarks. Carlo Chatrian, Artistic Director of the Festival del film Locarno, will participate in a Q&A session after the screening.

The series will continue with Swiss director Eileen Hofer’s Horizontes, a fine documentary portraying the lives of three Cuban ballet dancers at different stages in their careers. Director Eileen Hofer and Septime Webre, Artistic Director of The Washington Ballet, will be present and will participate in a Q&A session after the movie. A light reception with Swiss treats will follow the screening.

The series will conclude with Richmond-born director Rick Alverson’s Entertainment, which was presented in the Piazza Grande in Locarno as part of the Concorso Internazionale and reconfirms Alverson’s unique approach and perspective on the U.S. film scene.
