A discussion with movie director Samir at the Swiss Ambassador’s Residence will be followed by a 3-D screening of the documentary. Interviews are possible.


World Day Against the Death Penalty - Joint Declaration

In a new joint declaration with 17 other foreign ministers, Federal Councillor and Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs Didier Burkhalter has emphasised the importance of constructive dialogue between countries which have already abolished the death penalty, and those which have yet to do so. Dialogue is an important means of achieving worldwide abolition, he said. Switzerland firmly rejects the death penalty, under all circumstances, and is committed to its abolition worldwide by 2025.


Festival del Film Locarno Series Comes to Washington, D.C.

On 13 August the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs is meeting his Cuban counterpart Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla on an official visit.



Federal Councillor Schneider-Ammann Concludes His Trip to the United States by Signing a Declaration of Intent on Vocational Education and Training

Bern, 09.07.2015 - Federal Councillor Johann N. Schneider-Ammann wrapped up his trip to the U.S. today by signing a declaration of intent on Vocational Education and Training with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny S. Pritzker. This declaration will pave the way to more substantive cooperation between Switzerland and the U.S.. Before the declaration was signed, the Head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research (EAER) held talks with U.S. government representatives on economic issues, namely the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). On the first leg of the trip, the economic and scientific delegation, led by the Head of the EAER, visited the West Coast of the United States to promote Switzerland as a destination for education, research and investment, and to promote new partnerships in innovation.

This step marks an important milestone towards normalising relations between Cuba and the United States. The reopening of the embassies also brings to an end the protecting power mandates that Switzerland has carried out since 1961 for the United States in Cuba and, since 1991, for Cuba in the United States.


World Red Cross Red Crescent Day: Testimonials and Stories of Courage Unveiled at the Embassy of Switzerland

Today the Embassy of Switzerland is hosting the International Committee of the Red Cross’ (ICRC) Regional Delegation for the United States and Canada and the American Red Cross to launch “The Power of Humanity and the Human Voice” – an initiative showcasing stories about the impact of the Red Cross. The conversations were recorded by StoryCorps, the world’s largest oral history project, and are also archived in the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. Among the stories is that of Mike Durant, the “Black Hawk Down” pilot and former U.S. prisoner of war, who was captured in Somalia in 1993. Mike Durant and Suzanne Hofstetter, the ICRC delegate who visited him in captivity, will be the guests of honor.


Security: the focus of two visits by Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter

On Monday 27 April, Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter will take part in the 2015 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in New York, at which he will reiterate Switzerland's commitment to the prevention of the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and to their elimination. The head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) will then fly directly to Belgrade to attend a meeting of the Troika of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
