Oxfam - Reducing Water and Sanitation Related Diseases through Access to WASH Practices for Conflict Affected Populations in Sa’da Governorate
The project is designed to sustain and expand access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) practices through the reconstruction of war damaged water supply facilities, the rehabilitation or construction of school latrines and training on maintenance on them as well as the provision of hygiene promotion activities to the most vulnerable girls, boys, women and men affected by protracted conflict and malnutrition in the northern Sahar District in Sa’da Governorate of Yemen, in order to reduce the incidence of water and sanitation related diseases. The project also aims to contribute to the empowerment of women and children through shortened distances to the dwellings as well as the promotion of hygiene aspects and the access to safe sanitation.

Sa’da Governorate is an isolated Governorate under the control of the Huthi tribe. The Huthi insurgency has been waged since June 2004 resulting in six rounds of intense fighting and hostilities in neighbouring al-Jawf, ‘Amran and Hajja governorates. Sa’da has today the largest movement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and Returnees in Yemen – both moving within the governorate and from Sa’da to neighbouring governorates. Following the successive episodes of conflicts and associated destruction of available safe water sources, people resorted to obtaining water from unprotected sources. This has made the community more prone to water related diseases and in turn increased vulnerability, which is one of the key risks for malnutrition, especially among children under 5. Besides, the tribal norms of the northern communities expect women and children to assume responsibility for the water collection and to take the risk of collecting water from the high spring sources, making them vulnerable to protection risks. |
