AidData Chinese development finance profile

15.03.2024 - 30.06.2027

While China is becoming a main actor of international cooperation for development, it rarely discloses the specific financing terms and implementation details at project-level or transaction-level information about its foreign aid activities which makes it challenging for other actors of the international cooperation for development (including SDC) to understand their implications on recipient countries. The AidData project is building a dataset of country profiles summarizing Chinese’s aid with information form, function and impacts of their programs.

Peru, SEDAPAL: Emergency Water Supply in Lima

01.08.2023 - 31.12.2027

Lima with a population of over 12 million is subject to the highest seismic vulnerability in Peru. Hence, ensuring Lima’s water supply continuity in case of a major earthquake is crucial. Contribution to IFRC Emergency Appeal: Novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) outbreak

31.01.2020 - 31.12.2020

As of 06. February 2020 a total of 28’292 infections and 565 deaths have been reported with the majority of the cases occurring in China.

The preliminary Emergency Appeal from the IFRC is seeking Swiss Francs 3 Million to support Red Cross Red Crescent Societies globally, to contribute to stopping transmission of the virus, and helping to ensure the health and dignity of communities affected by the outbreak. IFRC will work closely with National Societies in countries where transmission has taken place, and on preparedness measures for all countries. The main area of focus for this response is Health and WASH, which will include risk communication and community engagement, psychosocial support, capacity building of NS on epidemic response and support. Other areas of focus are protection, gender and inclusion and migration. While at the moment the response is largely in the Asia Pacific region, the IFRC is supporting National Societies in at risk countries with preparedness activities. The IFRC at global, country and regional level is coordinating with other agencies including WHO, UNICEF and CDC in information sharing and guidance.

Chinese Zero Emission Buildings with Swiss Know-How (ZEB China)

01.01.2020 - 28.02.2025

By upgrading building emission standards, supporting demonstration buildings and enhancing capacities of professionals with Switzerland’s leading know-how on sustainable construction, the project will support low-carbon development of China’s building sector, which is the biggest in the world. It will also benefit the public health by improving the thermal comfort of buildings and reducing air pollution resulting from heating and cooling.

China: Rehabilitation and management strategy for over-pumped aquifers under a changing climate

01.09.2018 - 31.12.2022

In the past 30 years the aquifers in the North China plain have been over-exploited. Based on cutting-edge Sino-Swiss expertise in real-time groundwater monitoring and modelling, the project will implement groundwater and agricultural management policies to stabilize groundwater levels as a buffer to climate change induced droughts. The project will work with farmers and local authorities to facilitate policy uptake. Findings are relevant for many water-stressed countries and will be shared globally.

Clean Air China (CAC): Breaking Down the Dome: Sino-Swiss Cooperation on Air Pollution Source Apportionment for Better Air

01.05.2018 - 31.12.2023

The project will support the development of advanced air pollution source apportionment techniques with a Swiss and Chinese joint expert team to enable the design of more effective air pollution control policies beneficial for public health, the global climate and the environment. The techniques and experience of science-based policy making will be piloted in Chinese cities and shared with other developing countries strongly affected by air pollution to accelerate progress towards cleaner air.

Sino-Swiss Low Carbon Cities Project (SSLCC)

01.03.2015 - 31.12.2019

The project will contribute to the efforts made by Chinese Metropolitan Areas to reduce the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) intensity of their development through innovation and good practices from Switzerland. GHG sets in motion potentially irreversible effects including the rise of sea levels, drought or ice melting that put particular pressure on poor segments of societies worldwide. Nowadays, about 75% of GHG are emitted in urban housing, living and income generating activities. China is accountable for about 25% of the global GHG emissions.

China: Groundwater Rehabilitation under a changing climate

15.03.2014 - 31.07.2018

In the past 30 years the aquifers in the semi-arid North China Plain have been greatly overexploited. Climate change is increasing the drought problem. The project assesses measures to establish a long-term balanced regional water budget by water imports and water saving and applies complementary use of precipitation, surface water and groundwater. The system is based on real-time monitoring of groundwater tables and pumping rates and controlling pumping wells via a quota system. The insights of this project can be applied also in other countries.

01.02.2014 - 31.12.2018

The effects of climate change on the Yangtze River are crucial for the economy, food production, livelihood safety and ecosystems of about one third of China’s population. The present project studies the Jinsha River Basin in the upper Yangtze, where glacier and climatic variability greatly influence the water regimes, and measures are needed for a sustainable, integrated water management, catering for hazard and water management, hydroelectricity and agricultural production, as well as biodiversity and human wellbeing, in the coming years.
