The promotion of cultural diversity is anchored in the Swiss Constitution as part of sustainable development. Switzerland’s support of artists from Africa, Latin America, Asia and Eastern Europe is contributing to diversity in the analysis of social issues ensuring fundamental values in a democratic system. SDC’s partnership with the Locarno Festival supports independent filmmaking through the special Section Open Doors. Participants from Southeast Asia gain visibility, networks, knowledge, and opportunities for film production.

Hintergrund

Engaging in the support of an independent art scene also means engaging in strengthening freedom of expression and social debate. Film is an interesting vehicle and form of art but at the same time complicated in the production and distribution.

SDC engages in supporting art and culture as contribution to the implementation of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions 2005. This includes the support for international mobility of artists and the participation of artists from the South and East in international art and culture. 

Ziele The overall goal is to contribute to the strengthening and development of an independent local and regional filmproduction in Southeast Asia (Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand, Mongolia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines) as regional focus for the upcoming three years.

Resultate

Erwartete Resultate:  

  • 24 Filmprojects presented and boosted
  • 120 Filmmakers and producers given chances to network and find partners
  • 55 Films shown at the festival and promoted
  • Up to 18’000 spectators in the screenings of films from Southeast Asia
  • 3 years of coaching for filmmakers
  • 3 Open Doors Awards given


Resultate von früheren Phasen:  

  • A three year regional focus is ideal for an in-depth knowledge of needs of filmmakers
  • Formats were adapted inlcuding producers
  • More than 600 practitioners benefitted in 16 years of Open Doors, promoting over 200 filmproduction projects and reaching audiences in Locarno and online
  • Being an A-Level Festival with high visibility the Locarno Festival is a demonstrated platform for success, securing funding for films and fostering international carreers
