Alleviating suffering of the affected population in Khamer, Yemen, through provision of integrated WASH services

In the chronically water scarce Amran Governorate, the population is significantly dependent on water trucking for drinking and domestic water. With a total population of 43’400 including 13’400 IDP, Khamer District is one of the main IDP hosting areas in the Governorate The Khamer District water network has not been functional since 2006 and the entire population –is dependent on water trucking or on private boreholes. Since May 2015, Oxfam has been supporting the entire population of Khamer with water trucking. Meanwhile, Oxfam started the rehabilitation of the local water network, which upon completion will provide sustainable access to water.

Suffering of extremely vulnerable conflict affected women, men and children in Amran is reduced and they have improved food security and health status with increased access to food, water and hygiene services.

The total project beneficiaries are estimated to be 18’550 individuals (2’650 HHs) of which 100% will be served through rehabilitation of the locale water network. Food assistance will be provided to 450 households (3’150 individuals) in addition 3’000 households will be supported through the Humanitarian Pooled Fund.

The Emergency Food Security and Vulnerable Livelihoods team will identify the most vulnerable HHs to be targeted. The targeting process considers specific vulnerability criteria as well allowing locals to identify their own set of criteria.

• Women, men and children of 450 vulnerable households have improved access to nutritious food.
• Women, men and children in 450 beneficiary households are demonstrating safe practices related to food hygiene, dietary diversity and water management.
• Women, men and children of 2,650 beneficiary households of Khamer II network have improved and sustainable access to safe domestic water.

Erwartete Resultate:  

1. Targeted women, men and children of 450 beneficiary households receive food assistance.
2. Targeted women and men beneficiaries participated in activities related to food hygiene, dietary diversity, health and hygiene and water management.
3. Khamer –II water network rehabilitated to benefit 2’650 HHs, and being managed by the local water and sanitation authority.
