ACTED, South Sudan: Improving food security in Akobo Counties, Jonglei State
Akobo County hosts a growing number of IDPs, 45,000 as of June, 2015. Being an opposition SPLA stronghold and cut off from government services, the populations in Akobo (hosts & IDP’s) experience widespread food insecurity due to the depletion of household food stocks, limited functioning markets, high market prices, depleted livelihood options and diminishing purchasing power of most households. This project aims at contributing to the improvement of the resilience of affected populations through enhanced productivity and alternative livelihood options.

Hintergrund |
The conflict in South Sudan rages on and peace is unlikely to be restored soon. The economic & humanitarian situation continues to worsen. As a result of continued insecurity, the total IDP population reached 1.9 million; 45,000 IDPs are living in Akobo County. The population faces a worsening food insecurity situation, confirmed in May 2015 by the latest IPC report that anticipates 7.9 million people to face food insecurity in the entire country (already 4.6 million are facing severe food insecurity). Malnutrition is a major concern in the Akobo area. There is, however, scope for strengthening the resilience of the affected population through livelihood diversification. |
