Local Energy Strategies in Colombian Cities

Projekt abgeschlossen

Colombia is facing several challenges in terms of energy efficiency and renewable energy. The SECO program will support selected Colombian cities in achieving a more sustainable management and use of energy by introducing an adapted "Energy City/European Energy Award" approach to the country.

Hintergrund

Increased migration of population to urban areas, higher environmental requirements for production and a projected increase in electricity consumption of 38.5% in the next 10 years, are few of the many challenges faced by Colombia in terms of energy. Colombia has recognized the role of energy efficiency and renewable energy (EE/RE) in tackling these issues, boosting productivity and competitiveness and its contribution to fight climate change and therefore puts a clear focus on their promotion.

Ziele

The program will introduce an adapted Energy City/European Energy Award to Colombia. The goal is to link the national energy policy in terms of EE/RE, with the local implementation capacity in the public and private sector, academia and the general public, and thus to contribute to an improved energy management and the promotion of EE and RE at city level. The development of the Colombian Version of the approach, the "Local Energy Strategy" (EEL) comprises two phases: a first phase will test the structured energy management approach in 3 pilot cities, while at the same time implementing "quick-win" EE/RE projects in these cities. These projects shall produce tangible results and have a demonstration effect right at the onset of the program. Depending on the evaluation and the results of the first phase, a second phase will institutionalize the EEL framework at the national level. This would provide the base for a future scaling up of further EELs in other Colombian cities.

Mittelfristige Wirkungen

Increased quality and quantity of EE/RE activities of the selected cities.

Energy management is well organized at city level.

Action plans are being implemented by the municipality.

Savings in greenhouse gas emissions.

Increase of renewable energy consumption.
