Accurate, timely and reliable macroeconomic statistics are crucial to make informed policy decisions, monitor development objectives and allocate resources efficiently. Many developing countries however face persistent data gaps, especially on climate and public debt. This hampers decision making and increases debt-related risks. With funding prospects for investments in statistical systems dire, demand for hands-on support is high, especially as countries navigate a difficult macroeconomic environment and calibrate climate policies.

The main objective of the program is to support countries in strengthening their macroeconomic statistical systems to help them cope with a challenging (inter)national policy environment, while also fostering data transparency and accountability.

Access to better and more macroeconomic data to empower decision making and enhance public transparency and accountability.

Expand global reach of macroeconomic statistics training by updating and expanding the structured online learning curriculum.

Strengthen data transparency, as a public good, by helping countries begin participating in and/or advancing through the three tiers of the IMF Data Standards Initiatives.

Strengthen compilation and dissemination of select macro-relevant environmental and climate change statistics.

Erwartete Resultate:  

Staff capacity increased through training to enhance compilation and dissemination of foundational macroeconomic datasets (national accounts, public debt, external sector, real sector, ...).

Updating and expanding the multilingual online learning curriculum on foundations of macroeconomic statistics.

Support countries to align with prevailing data standards (e-GDDS, SDDS, SDDS Plus).

Compilation and dissemination of new datasets for macro-relevant environmental statistics (emissions, climate finance, physical and transition risks, ...).

More than 350 technical assistance missions and 100 multi-country trainings delivered across dozens of countries.

Over 13,000 participants from around the world have benefitted from training on the foundational concepts of macroeconomic and financial statistics through over 60 online course offerings in English, French and Spanish.

In Georgia, better compilation of statements of operations and balance sheets for 17 large non-market SoEs allowed to quantify their weight in the economy and identify a fiscal surplus.

In Ghana, an update of supply-use tables enabled the first ever compilation of air emissions accounts as a baseline for climate policy.

In Uzbekistan, broadened coverage of budgetary institutions accounts advanced the authorities’ commitment to subscribe to SDDS.

Mid-term external evaluation of Phase I concluded that the program was highly relevant, effective, coherent and efficient.
