Global Governance on Food Security

Projekt abgeschlossen

In line with its longstanding international involvement for sustainable multifunctional agriculture and people-centered food systems, Switzerland, through SDC/GPFS, will support an inclusive and effective global architecture for food security and nutrition, notably by strengthening core functions of the UN Committee on World Food Security (CFS) in Rome, by enhancing UN system-wide coordination and by supporting the participation of farmers’ organisations in public investment programmes in agriculture and rural development.

Hintergrund

The need for an effective global governance on food security and nutrition was neglected or addressed in an inconsistent manner until the global food security crisis of 2007/2008, which triggered a reform of intergovernmental (CFS) and UN system (interagency and policy linkages with governments) institutions for food security and nutrition to make them more inclusive and better coordinated. The set of complementary interventions aims at strengthening the implementation of this reform and to link it to public programmes at country level.

Ziele

The global architecture for food security and nutrition contributes in an effective manner to reducing hunger and malnutrition in all contexts.

Zielgruppen
  • Members of the Civil Society Mechanism for the CFS
  • HLPE Steering Committee, Project team members and Secretariat
  • Representatives from Farmers’ Organisations in up to 8 countries/year
  • UN Secretariat and delegations to post-2015 agenda negotiations
  • 23 UN system entities which are members of HLTF

Mittelfristige Wirkungen
  1. Through an inclusive and effective functioning, the CFS is enabled to deliver its policy outcomes (“enhanced global coordination on food security and nutrition questions; improved policy convergence on key food security and nutrition issues; strengthened national and regional food security and nutrition actions”).
  2. The formulation, implementation and monitoring of public investment programmes for agriculture and food security are inclusive of the needs and capacities of small-scale food producers thanks to resources mobilized by the Farmers’ Organisations Facility.
  3. Both the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) Office for Food Security and Nutrition and the Coordination Support Team of the UN high-level task force (HLTF) are enabled to foster coordination and coherence among UN system entities in their normative, analytical and operational activities on food security and nutrition at global, regional and country levels.
