Myanmar: ensuring children's education in the face of cyclones and conflict

Rebuilding schools destroyed by a cyclone in a region riven by inter-communal violence: this was the aim of a project undertaken by the SDC and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Rakhine State, Myanmar. Nearly 600 students are now able to attend school in safe buildings. The experience gained in this project will be used to rehabilitate other schools in Rakhine State.

Following the rehabilitation of 28 schools in northern Lebanon in the first phases of the project, the SDC is expanding its engagement to 24 other schools in the same region. The rehabilitation works are being carried out in cooperation with the Lebanese authorities to help them cope with the large influx of refugee children from Syria.

Action against HIV/AIDS in Southern African prisons

Faced with an alarming prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Southern African prisons, the SDC has undertaken to reform the prison healthcare system in Malawi, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Help is being provided to the relevant authorities in the implementation of set standards of care. The prison staff are being trained. Funding is also being provided for new infrastructure projects targeted specifically at women and young prisoners.

Forging democracy through regional radio

After Tunisia's revolution of January 2011, the SDC assigned Fondation Hirondelle the mandate of professionalising Radio Tunisienne, the national radio broadcaster. One of its regional stations, Radio Gafsa, received advice and financial support to become a source of quality public information featuring independent content. The experience has since been replicated at four other regional stations.

Dans les régions du delta intérieur du Niger, au centre et au Nord du Mali, les populations rurales sont confrontées à des crises structurelles multiformes dont l’insécurité alimentaire. La DDC appuie les autorités locales avec des projets économiques dans les filières agricoles porteuses pour assurer la sécurité alimentaire et réduire la pauvreté d’au moins 150'000 personnes. En plus, elle accompagne les municipalités de cette zone dans la maitrise d’ouvrage du développement territorial et la gestion pacifique des ressources naturelles.

For thousands of people fleeing violence or extreme poverty, Libya is one of the most popular departure points for reaching Europe across the Mediterranean. The SDC supports two NGOs that aid migrants there who fall victim to attack or arbitrary detention. In 2015, Switzerland devoted CHF 2 million to the issues of migration and the protection of civilians in Libya.

Sustainable water and pasture management to alleviate the plight of Ethiopian pastoralists

Drought, fodder scarcity and conflicts over natural resources make life difficult for pastoralists in southern Ethiopia. The SDC has taken various measures to improve their food security and their resilience to crisis situations, ranging from the rehabilitation of pastureland and water points to the introduction of land use plans and the diversification of income sources for women.

Agri-Fin Mobile, a provider of agricultural and microfinanced services via mobile phone in Indonesia, Uganda and Zimbabwe, is expected to reach 280,000 smallholder farmers.
