Healthy people and animals in Ethiopia thanks to an interdisciplinary project: Jigjiga University One Health Initiative

Nomadic pastoralist communities, which constitute one tenth of Ethiopia’s population, have little access to health services. In the Jigjiga University One Health Initiative, the SDC is helping to establish local healthcare services by supporting an interdisciplinary centre of excellence at Jigjiga University in eastern Ethiopia.

Unequal access to employment and the mismatch between education and labour market requirements are among the reasons for the high youth-unemployment in Albania. The Vocational Education and Training (VET) system therefore is undergoing a reorientation in order to meet labour market needs. Through the Skills Development for Employment Programme Switzerland is supporting these reforms.

A varied and sustainable diet from the field to the plate

Malnutrition affects more than two billion people around the world. In Zambia and Uganda, which have been particularly hard hit, the SDC has teamed up with SNV, an international NGO, on a programme to combat this scourge. The programme combines sustainable agriculture and adequate nutrition and focuses on the role of the family.

The SDC partners with the Jordanian Ministry of Education in rehabilitating public schools in the north of the country. The renovated schools enable a large proportion of Syrian refugee children to attend school with Jordan classmates. After the first 29 schools were rehabilitated the programme has been expanded to another 28 buildings.

Water supply in Southern Sudan: (Re-)construction during the transition period

The project is intended to sustainably improve water supplies for the 720,000 inhabitants and their livestock in the Southern Sudanese state of Northern Bahr el Ghazal. Located near the border with Northern Sudan, this state is one of the poorest places on the planet. Since the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) between Northern and Southern Sudan was signed in 2005, it has become one of the main points of return for displaced persons from Southern Sudan.

Livestock Development in the South of Armenia

In the provinces of Syunik and Vayots Dzor in southern Armenia, the agricultural sector mostly comprises subsistence farming where farmers are barely able to support their households. This project aims to help farmers increase their milk and meat production, and thus their incomes, by supporting local veterinary services (to improve animal health), facilitating access to milk and meat markets, and promoting the sharing of know-how among farmers.

Blue Peace Central Asia Strengthening of the Regional Institutional Framework for Integrated Water Resources Management in Central Asia

In Nepal, trail bridges are vital for rural mobility. Almost 80 of them were severely damaged or destroyed during the earthquakes of 2015, jeopardizing access to education, health services and local markets for thousands of inhabitants in the mountainous regions. The SDC joined the reconstruction efforts, basing its intervention on the long-standing expertise it has in the country.

Following the rehabilitation of 13 schools in northern Lebanon in the first phase of the project, the SDC is expanding its engagement to 15 other schools in the same region. The rehabilitation works are being carried out in cooperation with the Lebanese authorities to help them cope with the large influx of refugee children from Syria.
