Trade Promotion of Organic and Fair Trade Cotton
This consolidation phase continues to aim at alleviating poverty of small and medium sized cotton farmers through the development of certified organic and fair trade cotton value chains for the international market. The focus will be on assuring the economic and institutional viability of the program. This shall be achieved by improving the market orientation of the organic value chain development, by strengthening portfolio and business management of the partner institutions, and by shaping a conducive environment for the development of the organic sector.

| Background |
The organic and fair trade cotton market is a rapidly growing niche market. Excess demand on the global organic cotton market gives developing countries opportunities to access international markets. |
| Objectives |
The organic cotton program started in 2002 and the evaluation in 2011 showed incomes of organic cotton producers could be increased. This current project phase shall consolidate the previous project phases and stengthen the sustainability of results. |
| Medium-term outcomes |
The economic and institutional sustainablility of the organic and fair trade value chain is ensured at national level through diversified production systems, effective management, participation in decision making of the producer groups, a conducive policy environment and better access to local, regional and international markets. |
