Roundtable for Sustainable Biomass
The RSB was created in 2006 to develop a consensus among industry, governments and civil society on global sustainable production principles for biofuels. The resulting standard and certification system is globally recognized as the most credible reference for sustainable biofuel and bioenergy production.

| Background |
In a first phase, SECO financed the development of an online tool to support the RSB certification system. Following the first year of certification, the RSB is at a pivotal point in fulfilling its goal. RSB certification is gaining momentum, but still needs to reach a critical level at which traders see it as viable enough to require it from their suppliers. Large global companies requiring RSB certification would leverage impact on the entire market shifting it towards sustainability. This SECO support will help to boost the uptake of RSB certification and facilitate access to markets for groups of smallholders in developing countries. |
| Objectives |
The program aims to transform world production of biomaterials by ensuring market uptake of the most credible global sustainability standard for biomaterials and facilitating market access for smallholders in developing countries. |
| Medium-term outcomes |
Increased uptake of the RSB Standard by the industry and increased support by civil society and governments. Increased access to international markets and improved income for smallholders in developing countries. |
| Results |
Expected results: Operational RSB certification system for biomaterials. Version 3.0 of the RSB Standard. Increased demand and support for RSB Standard from global market leaders and key regional players. Certification of smallholder groups. Integration of RSB certification into the strategies and programs of development agencies. |
