In Bosnia and Herzegovina, reliable and safe urban water supply is not ensured for the whole population, notably because of old and undersized infrastructure. Besides, municipal utilities in charge of water supply often lack the capacities and financial means to operate and maintain existing infrastructure, not to mention to invest in extending the services. With a budget increase, additional measures to reduce the flood risk were introduced.

Overall, the project aims at securing water supply to the populations of Zenica and Tuzla by rehabilitating and extending the respective water supply systems, and ensuring the sustainability of the investment by providing the water utilities with the capacities to technically and financially operating the water network. Financial sustainability is also secured through a progressive adjustment of water tariffs towards cost-coverage thresholds.

The expected impact of the project is to improve the living conditions of the population in Tuzla and Zenica.

Medium-term outcomes

To establish a reliable and hygienic water supply for the population in Tuzla and Zenica at a cost covering and socially acceptable price.

Expected results:

Improved water supply in Tuzla, Zenica

Improved wastewater system in Zenica.

Strengthened capacities and efficient operation of the public utility companies in the two municipalities.
